About the Course
Acknowledgement of SupportAn educational grant from Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (RWJF) supported the creation of this web-based course. RWJF focuses on the pressing health and health care issues facing our country and works with a diverse group of organizations and individuals to identify solutions and achieve comprehensive, meaningful and timely change. BackgroundKnowledge in the field of genetics and genomics is growing at a rapid pace and is influencing virtually all areas of life science research as well as the practice of medicine and the delivery of health care. Because of the importance of genetics and genomics to modern biological and biomedical science, many top-tier universities and colleges offer interdisciplinary, problem-based courses that provide their students with the most current knowledge in this field. However, not all students have access to these educational opportunities. Center for Educational Outreach (CEO) at Baylor College of Medicine is using the power of the Internet to provide all students, in fact all interested individuals, with learning opportunities that usually are available only at some institutions. With generous support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, BCM has created a web-based course entitled Genes, Health and Society, designed to provide high-quality, interdisciplinary, inquiry-based instruction in the rapidly expanding field of genetics and genomics. The course is structured around real-world themes designed to develop students’ abilities to think critically and to expose students to important and new ideas in the sciences.
