Breeding for a Beautiful Merle Coat
3. Explain to students that the allele for producing desirable merle color markings is a version of a gene important for development of several systems during growth of the embryo. One copy of the merle allele leads to the observable color pattern, but few negative effects. Two copies, however, cause a variety of health problems, including vision and hearing problems.
