Infectious diseases are a leading cause of death worldwide. They are an especially large problem in the developing world and in children. In addition to the human toll, infectious diseases present a large financial burden. In the United States alone, it has been estimated that the annual cost of medical care for treating infectious diseases is about $120 billion.
