Ignite Learning
A STEAM Exploration with the Hess Fire Truck
Baylor College of Medicine and Hess Corporation have joined forces again to provide another engaging resource for teaching STEM content to young learners: the 2024 Hess Fire Truck with Car and Motorcycle and the accompanying teacher guide provide plenty of hands-on opportunities to ignite STEM learning while showcasing the important tools and responsibilities of a well-equipped firefighting team.
Activities in this guide use the Hess Fire Truck with Car and Motorcycle to explore force and motion, basic fire science and fire safety, geometry, and other critical elements relevant to the important role of firefighters in protecting lives and property. Additionally, the guide offers an activity that blends art with STEM, giving us the modified acronym STEAM.
The eight activities in this guide are designed for students in grades K–8 and support the Three Dimensions of Science Learning in the Next Generation Science Standards. Each activity can be easily adapted for learners in specific grades, and they can be presented sequentially, individually, or incorporated into an existing curriculum. Learners are sure to get “fired up” when using the Hess Fire Truck with Car and Motorcycle to explore the eight activities in this guide!
The following STEM activities are included in the guide:
- Fire, Fire: What is fire, and how are fires put out?
- Hess City Fire Department: When the central fire department dispatch center receives a 911 call, which of the city’s fire stations is called into action?
- Ladder Lift: How does a fire truck lift, extend, and position its ladder?
- Measuring Up: How high can a ladder reach based on its angle?
- “Tanker” Fire Truck: How does the weight of water carried by the “tanker” fire truck affect the energy needed to move the truck from one place to another?
- Off-Road Hill Climb: How will the performance of two distinct power systems compare when the fire chief car and motorcycle navigate steep slopes?
- Firefighters’ Picnic: How do firefighters spend their leisure time when they’re not fighting fires?
- Custom-Designed Fire Truck: What kind of fire truck can you design, and what will its purpose be?
