Interestingly, the “gears” disappear from their legs after they have molted for the final time and emerged as adults. From that point, the plant hoppers rely on simple friction to coordinate their leaps. Have your students hypothesize about reasons for this unusual trait, and use the news to get them thinking like scientists!
